It all started with a pair of jeans that were just a wee bit too tight.
I noticed almost absentmindedly about a month ago that I had to do the dreaded sucking in of the stomach just to button my favorite pair of jeans. Obviously my lack of exercise during the scorching summer was coming back to haunt me. Then I had my annual physical and realized I had gained almost 10 pounds in just a few months. Not to mention my cholesterol was creeping up into the 200s again.
I'm cursed with some bad genetics that make my family a cardiovascular nightmare, and my high cholesterol was discovered when I was only 9 years old. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet have always been enough to keep my cholesterol within acceptable limits, but falling off of both the exercise and the healthy diet during the summer was enough to send my cholesterol into the unhealthy range.
After a stern lecture from my primary care physician I realized that while my current lifestyle was unhealthy for me, it was also setting a really bad example for my kids. I had to make changes. There is no better time than now. Fall is here. The weather is cooling down, and there are no excuses to stop me from making healthy, smart choices part of my everyday life.
My family is fortunate enough to have wonderful health insurance through a Blue Company, and I was recently introduced to a really amazing program called Blue365®. Blue365 is a national program offered by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to members of participating Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Companies that offers access to savings on a variety of fitness, nutrition, health, and even travel options.
It's the perfect way to add healthy, fun activities into your life, even on a budget. The program offers discounted products and services each week, all designed to help you make healthy lifestyle choices. Members receive a weekly email detailing the current featured deals and the discounts are also promoted on the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Facebook Page. This program is unique to Blue Companies and really shows their commitment to helping their members live healthy, happy lives.
There could not have been a more perfect time for me to find this program, with my new determination to get healthy and provide a better example for my kids. With the Reebok deal that I found on the Blue365 website, I purchased a pair of fabulous running shoes for myself at a great discount!
Every single night my family and I will be out running on the trails in our neighborhood. Not only will these nightly runs help us get back into shape, but they also provide a chance for some family time. With kids who are getting older it is harder to find activities that everyone actually enjoys so I was pleasantly surprised that the kids are just as excited to get out and run as I am. On the nights when it rains or we just can't get out and run, we will be using the Elliptical machine that has been serving as a great clothes hanger for the past few months. Mase is especially fond of the Elliptical!

If you are a member of a Blue Company, I encourage you to sign up for Blue365. It's free and the deals are great! If your company isn't yet participating in the Blue365® Program, you can still sign up and be notified when your Blue Company joins the Blue365 movement!

I actually just started a new workout routine at the beginning of September, because I had that same dreaded moment with a few pairs of jeans where I realized they didn't really fit anymore (my thighs are the trouble area). The new workout plan is 3 days a week, with a different focus every day (legs, arms, core). I'm also trying to eat healthier, though time and budget don't always align to let that happen. I definitely don't snack as often anymore, which I think will be a big help.
ReplyDeleteWe're actually just trying to get out in the neighborhood and walking more. The beach is only a block or so away, so there's really no excuse. But I actually stopped by for another reason....to tell you I nominated you for a blogger award. Don't kill me. :-) I picked my favorite blogs that make me laugh and just HAD to put you in there. You can read the details here: http://ramsaygrace.blogspot.com Hope you have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI have started walking at the local track. Ive lost 10 pounds since school started and hope to lose 20 more by Christmas. I've also cut down on the amount of food I consume.
ReplyDeleteI plan to get outside and walk. Plus, getting enough sleep and trying to eat right.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to stay healthy this fall and holiday season by eating right, getting enough sleep, and not letting the stress of it all, get to me.

I have not been as healthy as I'd like to be.... I'd like to get back into Yoga. I always feel so good when I'm working out. :)
ReplyDeletethepapermama@gmail.com
I have started working out 3 times a week for 20 minutes on the stationary bike. I am working on getting it up to 5 times a week for 20 minutes. I am targeting having 2 pop-free days a week (I don't drink a lot of pop, about 20 oz. a day but I want to cut back on that). I am also trying to cut back on other sugary snacks/processed food.

I plan to stay healthy by drinking more water, walking my dog every day and trying to only eat when I am actually hungry.
ReplyDeleteWhen the weather starts getting cold around here, I like to do exercise DVDs in my home. Some of my favorites are Jillian Michaels’ 30-day Shred, the 10-Minute Trainer, and Turbo Jam. We also make a lot of healthy crockpot meals and try to avoid eating fast food. I also use a small plate and fill it with veggies at holiday parties, so I am less likely to overeat!

I am sticking to meal planning, as I often fall into eating comfort food when it gets cold and dark. I am also going to keep my commitment to exercising at least 4 times a week.

Eating healthy. Watching the sweets. Walking. Taking vitamins. I already got a flu shot as I am near my young nieces and nephews a lot and I tend to older parents. I am trying to get enough sleep. I am trying to stay hydrated with water. I use a stepper when watching tv. I also make sure that I have time with my husband and friends. I also have a signed up for yoga and I do acupuncture once a week. My husband and I try not to use sodium and we try to get fresh fruit and veggies in each meal.
ReplyDeleteIncreasing my water intake and getting more sleep helps me stay healthy through the winter.

ReplyDeleteWe do okay with mild activity, since we walk to and from school every day, but I could stand to do more cardio. What I really plan to do is make healthier food choices; it's all too easy to grab something prepackaged (and fattening), snag a handful of chips when I pass through the kitchen, or snack on the couch in front of the tv after a long day. Paying more attention to what, when, and why I eat is a realistic step I can take in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to work out at the gym or hike to stay healthy through the Fall and holiday season.
